A Stand for Justice:Protest Against IDF Soldiers Speaking at Cal State San Marcos

On March 25, 2025, the campus of California State University, San Marcos, was the site of a powerful and emotional protest. Students, faculty, and community members gathered in response to a controversial event – the university’s decision to allow Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers to speak on campus. The protest highlighted strong opposition to giving a platform to individuals many believe are associated with war crimes and human rights abuses.

The protest centered on the argument that it was unacceptable for an institution of higher learning to provide a space for those who are seen by many as complicit in acts of mass violence and genocide. The decision to invite the IDF soldiers to speak was met with passionate criticism from various groups on campus, who argued that it was wrong to normalize or legitimize such figures by allowing them to share their perspectives in a place of education.

One of the most moving moments came when a woman who had lost 100 members of her extended family in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict shared her personal story. Her testimony of grief and loss underscored the deep emotional impact of the ongoing conflict and the stakes of allowing such figures to speak freely on campus.

The protest also drew attention to the case of the “San Marcos Six,” the four students and two faculty members facing disciplinary action for their involvement in a protest against the IDF visit last month. Many attendees voiced their outrage at the university’s response to these individuals, framing it as an example of punishment for standing up for justice and against perceived violence. The protestors argued that academic institutions should serve as spaces for free expression and dissent, not for silencing those who fight for human rights.

Speakers at the protest emphasized solidarity with those who had spoken out against the IDF event and demanded accountability from the university administration. Dr. Jason Perez, a professor in the university’s Ethnic Studies department, was among the many influential voices present. He passionately spoke about the need for solidarity with oppressed people worldwide and stressed that the university had a responsibility to foster an environment that upholds human dignity and justice.

What stood out most about the protest was the sense of unity and collective determination among the participants. The event served as a testament to the power of community action and the strength of conviction. People from all walks of life came together to stand against perceived injustice, showing that in times of division, solidarity can serve as a powerful force for change.

In the face of adversity, the protestors demonstrated immense faith in their cause. They showed that they were willing to take a stand, even when it meant challenging the very institution that they were a part of. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for what one believes in, even when the odds seem insurmountable.

As the protest came to a close, one message resonated clearly: the fight for justice and human rights is ongoing, and the people of Cal State San Marcos are committed to standing in solidarity with those who are oppressed. Their unwavering determination showed that even in the face of opposition, they will continue to raise their voices and demand accountability, ensuring that the principles of justice and dignity remain at the forefront of their efforts.
